Noni (Morinda citrifolia), used for centuries in Polynesian traditional medicine, is rich in antioxidants. Recent in vitro and animal studies show that noni contains compounds with pain relieving, anti-bacterial and anti-tumor activities⁵. These activities have not been studied in humans yet.

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) contains compounds that have antioxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-histamine, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. Millions of people suffer from some sort of digestive problem on a frequent basis. Proper digestion of food is important for our health and when digestion is limited in any way, disease can result. When we age, the the digestive tract produces less digestive enzymes.

Papain is a protease (enzyme that breaks down proteins) found in papayas (Carica papaya). Papain has been used for centuries as a meat tenderizer and can be used to stop the itch associated with bee stings, jellyfish by breaking down the toxin protein found in the venom.

Bromelain, traditionally used as a meat tenderizer, is an extract from the stems or the fruit of pineapples (plant family of the Bromeliaceae). Bromelain contains proteolytic enzymes (enzymes that break down proteins) and is thought to have some therapeutic effect on certain bacterial enterotoxins that can produce diarrhea³, although the therapeutic benefit of bromelain remains unproven.

Milk Thistle extract has long been used for chronic liver disease, including liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis and gallbladder disorders. The active compounds in milk thistle are called silymarin. Based on a review of several clinical studies that studied the potential effects of milk thistle on liver, it is not clear whether milk thistle has any effect on liver function¹.

Dandelion (Taraxacum) stimulates the secretion of bile from the gall bladder and thereby improves digestion and stimulates elimination. Dandelion has shown some promise in animal studies, however it is not clear whether dandelion extract has any effect on liver in humans².

Chicory Root (Cichorium intybus) has traditionally been used for the manufacturing of coffee substitues. Chicory root main component is inulin, but it is is rich in aromatics and minerals, which may provide relief from bloating and soothe digestion. Chicory extract and inulin have been shown to lower cholesterol absorption from the gut in rats³, but a similar effect in humans has not yet been investigated.

Artichoke Leaf (Cynara cardunculus) has long been used for liver and digestive problems. The active compound in artichoke, cynarin, has been shown to stimulate the flow of bile in rats⁴. Artichoke extracts have been shown to provide antioxidant protection of human leucocytes in cell culture⁵.

Larch (from the Larix occidentalis and Larix laricina trees) is a powder extract that contains digestable and fermentable fiber. Larch is particularly high in the Arabinogalactan Polysaccharide, which is a branched, high molecular weight sugar polymer that may support immune function, liver function and digestion⁶.

Information on Sodium Lauryl Sulfate / Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Sodium Lauryl sulfate (sodium dodecyl sulfate) and sodium laureth sulfate are powerful detergents and are frequently used in personal care products such as liquid soaps, shampoo's and shower gels. It is a relatively cheap ingredient and is used for its strong cleaning and foaming properties. However, the sulfate group is strongly acidic and frequently causes skin irritations.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is often used in laboratories to denature proteins (disrupting the protein's native shape), in preparation for gel electrophoresis. Sodium lauryl sulfate can be modified into a less reactive sodium laureth sulfate. Another closely related compound is sodium myreth sulfate.

In order to protect your skin from irritation, it is best to avoid using personal care products that contain sulfated lauryl alcohols. There are many personal care products on the market that contain more gentle surfactants such as cocamidopropyl betaine.
